Optical Fiber Connector Adapters, Receptacles or Sleeves Manufactured by Ceriotec

We have machined various optical fiber connector parts such as SMA and FC connector adapters, receptacles or sleeves via swiss turning. Examples of the various connector components we have machined are as follows:

Short Notes on Structure of Optical Fiber Connectors

Most optical fiber connectors have some common elements shown in the figure below:
The optical fiber is mounted in a long thin cylinder called a ferrule with a hole sized to match the fiber cladding diameter. The ferrule is mounted within the connector body, which is attached to the cable structure. The strain-relief boot shields the junction of the connector body and the cable.

Optical Fiber Ferrule Fiber connectors mate in adapters called coupling receptacles or sleeves that fit between two connectors. Similar adaptors are mounted on transmitters and receivers to mate with fiber connectors.

Ferrules are typically made of metal or ceramic, but some are made of plastic. Usually, the plastic coating is stripped off the optical fiber before the fiber is inserted into the ferrule. Standard ferrule bore diameters are 126 +1/-0 microns for single mode connectors and 127 +2/-0 microns for multimode connectors.

There are various types of connectors in use today. Besides other custom connectors, Ceriotec has made components for two optical connector types below.

SMA Connector

SMA optical fiber connectors

The SMA connector is the classic connector for multimode and single mode fibers. The fiber is inserted into a precisely matching ferrule and epoxied in place. The fiber tip is polished along with the end of the mounting barrel.

FC Connector

FC optical fiber connector

The FC connector is a NTT (Nippon Telephone and Telegraph) design for single mode fiber. This is a spring-loaded connector with screw-on nut. It uses a metal ferrule to align the fiber.
